Internship Log

Standard 1

Key Element 1a: Knowing and understanding young children’s characteristics and needs, from birth through age 8.

I have met this key element by consistently using my knowledge of child development to create appropriate learning activities for the children in my classroom. For example, I have a deep understanding of the typical milestones and developmental stages of Preschool children aged 3-5, and I use this knowledge to design activities that are engaging and developmentally appropriate. When planning activities, I consider the individual needs and abilities of each child, ensuring that they are challenged but not overwhelmed. I also work to make each activity expandable for students in need of additional challenges.

Standard 1

Key Element 1b: Knowing and understanding the multiple influences on early development and learning.

I am working toward meeting this key element by continually learning about and staying informed about the various factors that can influence a child's development and learning. For instance, I am in this program and have been attending workshops on the importance of play in learning and how to best support students with sensory processing challenges. These experiences have enriched my understanding of how different influences can affect a child's growth and learning such as adding loose parts into the class space.

Standard 5

Key Element 5a: Understanding content knowledge and resources in academic disciplines.

I have met this key element by having a deep understanding of the content areas that are essential for early childhood education. I am well-versed in language and literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies, and I also incorporate the arts and physical activity into the curriculum. For example, I design activities that integrate art and music into the learning process, providing a well-rounded (and fun!) educational experience for young children.

Standard 5

Key Element 5b: Knowing and using the central concepts, inquiry tools, and structures of content areas or academic disciplines.

I have met this key element by not only understanding the core concepts and structures of each content area but also by incorporating inquiry-based teaching strategies. For instance, in science, I encourage children to ask questions, explore, and make observations to foster their curiosity and critical thinking. This approach aligns with the central concepts of scientific inquiry and problem-solving.
